American Express Centurion Lounge Access Rules in 2026

Every way to get into a Centurion Lounge, the new Platinum guest fee, and which cards still grant the best value.

American Express Centurion Lounges set the modern standard for premium U.S. airport lounges, and the access rules have tightened meaningfully over the past three years. As of 2026, here's how to get in, who comes with you, and what it costs.

The base requirement: a personal American Express Platinum, Business Platinum, or Centurion (the Black Card) account in your name. Authorized users on Platinum accounts also receive Centurion access for themselves, but the cardmember's complimentary guest entitlements are tied to the primary account.

The same-day flight rule is now strictly enforced. You must present a same-day boarding pass on any airline operating from the airport you're trying to enter. The boarding pass must be for travel within 24 hours, and arrival into the airport (versus departure from it) is increasingly being challenged by Centurion door staff at the busiest locations. Some lounges, particularly the Las Vegas and DFW Centurion locations, allow access for arrivals; others do not.

Guest policy: this is where things have changed the most. Effective the most recent program year, Platinum cardholders no longer receive automatic complimentary guest access at Centurion Lounges. To bring two guests free, the cardholder must spend at least $75,000 on their Platinum or Business Platinum card during the calendar year. Below that threshold, guests cost $50 per adult and $30 per child, with children under two free. Centurion (Black Card) members retain unlimited complimentary guest access.

Capacity has become the operational headache of the network. The flagship Centurion Lounges at JFK, LAX, ATL, and DFW now regularly exceed capacity during morning and evening departure banks, and Amex has rolled out timed reservations or wait-list systems at several locations. Plan to arrive 90 minutes ahead of boarding if you're targeting a peak-time visit, and have a backup plan — there's no guarantee of immediate entry.

A note on the new buildouts: the 2024 and 2025 wave of Centurion openings (DCA, expanded JFK, IAH expansion) emphasize larger square footage, dedicated family rooms, and shower suites. They also significantly expand the network in cities where Amex previously had no presence. If you fly out of Reagan National, the new DCA Centurion Lounge is genuinely worth a Platinum membership just on its own merits.
